Itinerary description
The climb, although beautiful, is quite steep in parts, resembling natural stairs, making the walk moderately challenging. After a point beyond a popular climbing rock, there's a fork: one path leads to Castelo dos Mouros and Palácio da Pena's main entrance, but we recommend the less crowded path towards Palácio da Pena Park, Vale dos Lagos. This route offers a peaceful entrance to the park, a true hidden gem.
Tickets for the park (and optionally the palace) can be bought online or onsite. Inside, you can stick to the main roads or explore smaller trails. Don't miss visiting the Chalet and the stunning viewpoint Alto de Cha (Tea High) for magnificent views of Palácio da Pena and the surrounding coast. Another option is Cruz Alta (High Cross), but it's often busier and the view is partially obstructed by trees.
Next, head to Palácio da Pena itself, a fairytale destination that's always bustling but breathtakingly beautiful. After visiting, take the path towards the Main Entrance, then follow the Percurso da Pena (PR2) back to the historic city center. This descent is gentler, ideal for the return journey. Along the way, pass by Castelo dos Mouros, where you can also visit (tickets available online or onsite).
Instead of returning to the Historic Centre, we took a path near Igreja Santa Maria towards Parque de Liberdade (Liberty Park), leading back to the Train Station.
This walk is perfect for those who enjoy hiking and have good mobility. It covers Sintra's central highlights, but other variations are possible, like starting with the Igreja de Santa Maria walk (PR1 - Santa Maria) and then up on the Percurso da Pena walk (PR2 - Percurso da Pena)or heading straight to the main entrance of Palácio da Pena. Enjoy your walk!
