SMALL PEAK OF ADAM (Sri Lanka):
Brief but intense trek, of 3.5 kilometers and 150 meters of accumulated positive slope, to the small Adan's Peak, in the town of Ella, in the heart of the highlands of Sri Lanka. It is an affordable route, which if it extends to a second peak beyond the genuine, the Little Sri Padaya, requires some effort and suffocation, to face a descent and rise more, both short but pronounced and that will have to be undone to the return
Even the little Adam's Peak is 35 minutes. Up to the second promontory, the kick is stretched one hour. Reaching the Little Sri Padaya is worthwhile to continue enjoying the superb views, both the gap of Ella (Ella's Gap) and the imposing Rock of Ella (Ella's rock).
The peak owes its name to the similarity with the famous peak of Adam (2,243 m), one of the highest Sri Lankan summits, also venerated by the Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim religions. Despite their semantic brotherhood, both peaks are 50-60 kilometers apart, and the small one is not even half the height of the other.
It is a very busy route during the holiday season. In our case (August 5, 2018), with much turisteo. Its accessibility allows even families with girls and boys of four and five years to reach not only the affordable little Adam's Peak but the second summit, which requires to save an abrupt and slippery slope, first, and then a brief but intense slope, because both cusps are separated by a small hill (flag 10 of the track). Beware of slips on the descent section of the small peak of Adam to the pass. Both on this stretch and in the climb up to the Little Sri Padaya may, on occasion, have to be helped fleetingly by the hands.
It is advisable to bring sunscreen, as it remains exposed to the sun intensely for two hours, and water (can be purchased along the road in a couple of posts).
The route starts at a detour to the right of the road that goes from Ella to Balleketuwa (B-113), along a dirt road at the height of The Chillout establishment (flag 1 of the track). The track runs through a beautiful hill of tea for about 20 minutes (flag 2), where the collectors work in very poor working conditions. There are even tourists who pay money to tea women for taking a picture.
After the gentle kick, where you can enjoy the views of the rock of Ella and the gap of Ella (a mountainous section where the road that leads to the south of the island), you take a detour to the right signposted ( flag 3), a barrier will be overcome, continue for a while and reach the stairs that lead to the top (flag 4 of the track). The climb takes just 10-15 minutes, which, however, will cause the first hot flashes.
From the peak, crowned with two seated buddhas, the view is great. It is a busy summit. Between comings and goings, no less than 15 people will remain at the same time. There are those who choose to return at this point, but it is worth continuing. To the south we can see the second peak to which we will go. The road has no loss. If it is already late in the morning, you will see walkers heading down the hill and the subsequent climb to the twin summit. We insist on extreme caution in this new stretch to avoid slips.
