Trail photos
Near the car park at the beginning of the trail, at Point Kean (Photo 1), about twenty fur seals bask in the sun (Photos 2 and 3). Next door, there are herons, geese (Photo 4), seagulls (Photo 5), cormorants, gulls ... The trail runs along the coast, above the cliff overlooking the shore. Hutton, in danger of extinction, only breeds in Kaikoura, there are two colonies in the mountains facing the sea and an artificial colony protected from predators, built in 2004 to save the species. This artificial colony is located on the peninsula at Whalers bay, near the trail. There is an informative sign about this colony on the side of the trail. Nearby, a trail descends the sediment cliff (Photo 6) and leads to the shore. Near a sugar loaf, there is a migratory bird colony in winter, but we went there in the summer. We came back on the trail at the top of the cliff and we continued to South Bay where we saw cormorants and green-necked ducks
