Itinerary description

4h:20m:54s | 13.4 km
The trail to Tiger Hill can be hiked in either direction. It is one of the most pleasant and relaxing trials on Penang Island and does not require that you be super fit. Beginning at Top Station follow Summit Road towards Western Hill Road (Jl. Bukit Bendara) for a couple of kilometres until locating first the Old Moniot Trail then the second trail head which is the one followed. Along Summit Road, there are a number of older homes dating back to the early 1900's as well as a new development under construction. Mornings are generally cooler than temperatures of the city below. Upon reaching the trail head turn left along what appears to be a road for the first few hundred metres. Along the trail you will see a sign for Tiger Hill. The concrete roadway gives way to a concrete path then to bare ground further along. The trail serves motorcycle traffic for local upland farmers but there are very few farmers in this area. Passing through upland forest and gardens you will see large groves of ginger. The trail winds its way to the main junction which leads to Balik Pulau in the west and to Air Itam (Black Water) to the East. We decided to go all the way to the junction to gather the GPS points with a plan to do the other trails at another time. At this point we back tracked to take the route to the top of Tiger Hill. Reaching the top of Tiger Hill takes less than a 1/2 hour. Rain Gauge 29 marks the relative top of Tiger Hill. There are two trails visible from the location of the rain gauge. The trail on the right leads towards Air Itam Dam while the trail on the left, which is the trail followed, leads back towards Summit Road. The trial from this point onwards is slightly overgrown but there is no difficulty following it. Eventually reaching the old Moniot Road trail turn left and this then takes you back to Summit Road.
