Itinerary description
We climb from Abovos beach of Afissos to the village of Niaou (Afetes) walking in the shadow of a cool dry riverbed (an exciting and fairly demanding walk, not recommended on rainy days). We can stop at the village square for a drink and then come back following the course of the old main cobblestone kalderimi (a part of which is now covered by asphalt), passing from an arched stone bridge and the cemetery of Niaou, enjoying spectacular views to the sea. Aπό την παραλία του Αμποβού στην Αφησσο δίπλα στο κέντρο ''Μαραμπού'' ανηφορίζουμε ακολουθώντας αρχικά τον τσιμεντόδρομο και μετά μπαίνουμε μέσα στο εντυπωσιακό φαράγγι του Χαλορέματος (προσοχή, να αποφεύγεται αν ο καιρός είναι βροχερός) για να φθάσουμε στη Νιάου (Αφέτες). Στη συνέχεια επιστρέφουμε στην Αφησσο στα ίχνη του παλιού καλντεριμιού, περνώντας από το πέτρινο γεφύρι Φραγκάκη και από το νεκροταφείo του χωριού, έχοντας υπέροχη θέα προς τη θάλασσα. Τελεια διαδρομη με μετρια δυσκολια.
This is a great hike. Mostly climbing various sized boulders while walking up the riverbed. Which is mostly shaded. At the top there is a small café where u can get something to drink before starting down. It is moderately difficult ,I am 74, wife 69, my nephew is 34 and we all enjoyed it. Walking down looking at the sea was also awesome.

initially at the trailhead there are a couple of small signs nailed on to trees that say "Trail" with an arrow.Have to watch for the red blotches of paint on the rocks as you go along.Great trail fairly difficult,but fun. 3 of us hiked ages 74,69,34.
To go up the path is beautiful, it is too bad that the return is by the road.

A very interesting route..the geology and scenery of the gorge was unexpected—even for people like us who thought we knew Pelion well. However it has to be said that the ascent is quite difficult..I would place it well beyond moderate. Also I think it would be unwise to do it unaccompanied. The steps at the top of the gorge will soon need repairing..they were just about OK but a few more wet seasons and they might rot away. I think it is a bit longer than shown but the length itself isn’t the issue.
The plateia at the top is delightful. The walk down is a very welcome contrast with easy walking and open views. Altogether quite an adventure!!!
Update October 2023: After the catastrophic storms and floods of September 2023, the wooden bridge is gone,literally disappeared, and the kalderimi badly damaged. So any attempt to walk can be dangerous.
Ενημέρωση Οκτώβριος 2023: Μετά τις καταστροφικές καταιγίδες και τις πλημμύρες του Σεπτεμβρίου 2023, η ξύλινη γέφυρα χάθηκε, κυριολεκτικά εξαφανίστηκε και το καλντερίμι υπέστη σοβαρές ζημιές. Έτσι, οποιαδήποτε προσπάθεια να περπατήσετε μπορεί να είναι επικίνδυνη.
Η διαδρομή μέσα από το φαράγγι είναι πολύ καλή αλλά μετά τις πλημμύρες έχει πέσει η ξύλινη πεζογέφυρα πού βρίσκεται σχεδόν στο τέλος της διαδρομής.
Και αυτό δυσχεραίνει αρκετά την έξοδο από τη φαράγγι. Χάνεται η σήμανση και χρειάστηκε να σκαρφαλώσουμε για λίγο.
