Itinerary description
This route leads you up and through Pegia forest, taking in part of the Kathikas Nature Trail, before heading across the top of Avakas Gorge, and down to Lara Bay, along the Akamas coastline, and then back to your start point.
It can roughly be broken into thirds. The first third is mostly up hill. But, on the plus side, it’s also the most picturesque. The forest trail is stunning, with lots of flowers and greenery in the spring.
The second section is mostly downhill, and follows rocky paths through rugged farmland down to the sea. You’ll probably see herds of goats, sheep, and pigs roaming free in this area.
The last section is mostly flat and follows the shoreline. There is one final hill and then it’s pretty much flat all the way back to the beginning.
This route is mostly off-road with just a couple of short tarmac stretches. The rest of the route is on gravel tracks and dirt roads. It can be muddy after rain, but any deep sections can easily be circumnavigated by heading into neighbouring fields.
There is very little shade on the route, especially for the last two-thirds, and no water or provisions, so be prepared.
There is a restaurant at Lara Bay, but it’s not always open. There are also tavernas near the start/end point.
While not an especially hard route, this is quite a long walk and pretty committing.
There are some long, steepish climbs at the start and it takes you out into an isolated area, which is a long way from your start point with no easy way back if you get into difficulties.
However, if you like long hikes in the beautiful Cypriot countryside, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy this one. Probably best done before the heat of the summer.
