Itinerary description

This is the whole FIMMVÖRÐUHÁLS trail hike done in one day.

It is a first part of the combined FIMMVÖRÐUHÁLS (Skógar-Þórsmörk ) + reverted LAUGAVEGUR (Þórsmörk -Landmannalaugar) if you inted to hike it in 4 days altogether.

You start with a nice climb from a camp to a viewpoint on top of the Skogafoss. Then you can choose from various routes, but I decided to stick to the most common one, which follows the river, as it is the most scenic one (a number of valleys and waterfalls). The trail goes slowly uphill and the landscape changes from green grass to grey dirt to black and white. After you cross a river using a wooden bridge you reach a hut where you can rest a bit. After it, there are several snow-crossings as the trail goes steeper and steeper. If the snow is not wet, it is not such a big problem, but it can still be pain in the ass without hiking poles. A newlly formed peaks Magni and Modi from the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption are in your sight and the shor climb up is a must-do. The view is godlike. As the name of the next part of landscape you are going to enter - Goðaland. In order to get there, you will start to descend. There is one a bit dangerous part where you go on the edge of a mountain with a rocky debris beneath you. This part is strenghtened with chains, caution with the heavy backpacks advised. Then a big flat plateau is the next step. The further down you go, the greener the land becomes again, until you reach the most dangerous part - Kattahryggir ridge. The chains are there again to help you. This part is very steep and absolutely not suitable for people with vertigo. In a windy weather with a heavy backpack, it is a challange. If the winds are strong, the rangers close the trail anyway. The path continues downwards while small birch trees appear. There is a lot of them and one pleasant surprise goes with it: loads of delicious edible mushrooms - birch boletes.
