Plitvice Lakes National Park is the country's renowned natural park, the only one on the UNESCO world heritage list and one of the natural attractions that bring much of tourism to the country. The source that provides water to the entire lake complex is the Korana River , encased in a valley populated by firs and beech trees.
We will walk through a place unique in the world, made up of 16 small lakes connected to each other by waterfalls and spouts, formed by a kind of limestone, the tuff. In turn, a network of trails and wooden walkways encourage us to explore the lakes along their banks and parading under the waterfalls.
We can complete the visit with the park's internal transport, made up of buses, panoramic trains and electric boats. In our case we will take the boat for two trips, one short at the beginning and the second for the end of the visit.
Fleeing from the overcrowding on vacation dates, we have chosen to visit the country at the entrance of autumn, discovering a good part of our destinations practically alone. In the lakes we knew that this would not be the case, but visiting them first thing in the morning we enjoyed a quite calm morning by the upper lakes.
At noon, the influx of tourists was already noticeable in the area of the lower lakes.
We access the park from Entrance 2, our idea is to travel all the paths that allow us to visit all the lakes and waterfalls. We access the park, leave the restaurant area behind and head directly to the jetty.
Here we will wait a few minutes for the first boat in the morning that will give us a short walk to the other shore, we will spend the morning exploring a circular route through the upper lakes.
The Park can be divided naturally into two episodes, the upper and lower lakes. Now we will walk through the complex of 12 upper lakes: Proscansko, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Big Lake, Small Lake, Vir, Galovac, Milino, Gradinsko, Burget and Kozjak, the stylized lake that serves as the axis to the Park. As well as the range of waterfalls that we will meet on the way.
Already on the other shore, we walk along the walkway that runs through small lagoons and waterfalls until we move along the path on the eastern front of the lakes. We leave out the option on our right for the return and continue upstream.
During the march, our catwalk will move from side to side in order to parade alongside the multitude of waterfalls. On these dates we will find a minimum flow, after the summer months, with waterfalls being cut off at some points, without detracting from the spectacular surroundings.
Back on the eastern bank, a comfortable path returns to stroll along the shore, gaining the space of a new lake and going back to the picturesque footbridge over the waters of Lake Proscansko, the highest lake of all.
On its waters we change to the west path, to the shadow of the valley and for the moment we are approaching the recreational area of Entrance 3. Here we will have the option of taking the panoramic train that runs along this entire flank of the lakes to Entrance 2 and 1 .
After a short stop, we continue along the path that accompanies the lakes downstream.
With the opposite perspective to that of the first hour, we return to the vicinity of the jetty, leaving it aside and stepping on a few meters of walkway again. We continue to the crossroads that allows us to link with the path that runs along the shore of Lake Kozjak, the other option would be to take the boat and make the journey to the jetty at the other end.
We, likewise, finish the walk next to the waters of the Kosjak on the same jetty. Although walking we won the rewarding walk along the waters of the lake, sometimes emerald green, other times turquoise blue, always immersed in the autumn tint of the beech forests that surround the lake.
Once we cross the entire west shore of Kozjak Lake we end up next to the jetty and the lake-side recreation area.
From here we start our second episode along the lower lakes. This complex houses four lakes, Milanovac, Gavanova, Kaluderovac and Novakovic Brod. Now we leave the wide valley of the upper lakes and walk immersed in canyons that reach 40 meters in height, endowing the turquoise and emerald waters of the lake with extreme beauty.
We descend towards the highest waterfall in the Park, after crossing over the Kozjak lake waterfall, a magnificent wooden walkway skirts the canyon over Lake Milanovac, practically in the air we pass near one of the most important waterfalls, Milka Ternina.
We continue the descent through the network of footbridges. We have left behind the crossroads through which we will return after crossing the cave and another that will take us a few meters back over the canyon, in front we will guess the spectacular canyon that gives rise to the Veliki Slap waterfall, an essential place in the visit to Plitvice.
Under the waterfall, surrounded by a good number of visitors, we are forced to retrace our steps. We wait for our first detour to the left to leave the wooden footbridge next to the lakes for a few moments.
On a marked trail, a rapid ascent earns us aerial views of Veliki Slap and the lower lakes.
Our path continues its march comfortably in search of Entrance 1, to continue the march on the lakes we would end up back at Entrance 2, with the possibility of taking the panoramic train back.
But we descend again next to the waters of the lakes crossing the cave, which leaves us on the same walkway through which we accessed from the recreational area.
We will then have to go back the path that separates us from the jetty, here we do, we wait for the next boat that will take us on a journey through Kozjak Lake to the jetty where we begin the visit.
The short walk to the entrance and parking will end the day in this unique place.
See you at the mountains.
