Paklenica National Park in Velika Paklenica Gorge
Paklenica National Park is located in the karst canyon of the Paklenica River in Starigrad, Northern Dalmatia, on the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain, not far from Zadar. It includes two cannons: Mala (Small) and Velika (Big) Paklenica. The small course has been dry in recent years. The national park was established in 1949 and is the second oldest in Croatia, after Plitvice Lakes National Park in northern Dalmatia.
The park area contains 150-200 km of tracks and trails, intended for tourists, from the Velika Paklenica canyon to the Manita Peć cave, the Lugarnica forest hut and the Planinarski Dom Paklenica mountain shelter, for those who to the mountains, leading to the highest peaks of Velebit. The trails in the Park are marked with paint signs and signposts.
The Velika Paklenica canyon is 14.5 kilometers long and, in its narrowest part, barely 50 meters wide.
Paklenica National Park is the most visited climbing site in Croatia, and the largest in South-Eastern Europe. There are more than 360 equipped routes of various levels of difficulty and length within the Paklenica climbing sites. The NW wall of the Anića kuk is particularly well known.
