Itinerary description

Hiking path to the Pan de Guajaibón, the highest elevation of western Cuba. The hike starts out with a pretty flat walk the first 6 kilometers. This could be done with bikes or possibly with a horse if you are able to find someone who is willing to take you.
Then you start the actual ascent which is pretty steep in a lot of parts. There seems to only be one obious trail going up, so once you found the entrance to the trail getting up and down should be easy. Some maintenance of the trail would be good, but at the time of writing it was decently well maintained.
On top you will walk over some 175 steps to find the leftovers of an old army barrack and a bust of Cuban hero Maceo. The views are spectacular reaching from Cayo Levisa in the North West to the mountaineous areas of Viñales and Terrazas. Good shoes and enough water is definitely a good recommendation. The villages around Sagua, the point of departure, do not have any supplies. If you are hungry when coming back try and ask some of the villagers if they can prepare a meal for you. In the village you can also ask for a guide if you feel unsure about finding the trail.
