Itinerary description

Palm forest - Tsoútsouros (without bees!)

So we started in Tsoutsouros, walked to Maridaki. It is the end of May and the waterfall was dry but we snorkelled off the beach (not much to see) and had a perfect lunch at the tiny restaurant near the waterfall. It’s easy to miss but the couple who run it are very friendly (we communicated via Google translate) and we ate a very delicious, fresh, local meal before ascending past the stunning mountains and war memorial to the palm forest. The forest is fenced off which was a shame, we had expected to walk through it. And the route up to the little church is dotted with bee hives, and a lot of bees on the track. We started slow but ended up rushing along with bees dive bombing our heads and in our hair. The little church was a welcome reprieve and we made our way to the little hat building and decided we didn’t want to return past the bees again so this is our alternative route back along the perimeter fence…

We stopped en route at the Agios Nikitas monastery which was a surreal and beautiful experience. We met a monk who showed us into the church in the rock. It was magical and highly recommended. We also stopped for a swim on the way home in Marikadi before dinner at Sarakina in Tsoutsouros - all delicious and recommend the aubergine dish!
