Itinerary description
I start this hike from the town of Paleochora at the Southwestern coastline of Crete, on paved road, and continue over to Gialiskari beach, partly on dirt road.
I then transfer on the E4 European Path towards Sougia. The path is well marked with black and yellow sprayed signs and polls.
I reach the archaeological site of Ancient Lissos (Λισός), a ruined city that had been the center of a league of ancient Cretan cities since 3rd century BC. The artifacts uncovered at Lissos can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Chania.
The site hosts an Odeon, a complex devoted to the ancient healing god Asclepius (Asclepieion) with a partly preserved mosaic, baths, a cemetery of Roman tombs (necropolis) and two early Christian churches.
There is a spring of drinkable water and resting areas with benches and tables.
Mobile network coverage had been relatively good throughout except few spots while descending to Lissos.
