Itinerary description
We now join the published Macedon Ranges Walking Track. Cross the main road and then push onto McGregor’s picnic ground. This track gets busy with camels hump walkers. My path to the woodend road was via Braemar College. When the MRWT forked left I took the right and began descending. At what appears to be a gully I took the right hand track that is more of a foot pad. At the school water tanks enter the college property and cut through to the Woodend road. This route goes through the Graham Brock reservoir. Pretty sure you shouldn’t be walking through it these days. I skirted the perimeter on the left hand side (west) but I suggest you go right back towards the college.
Walk on into to town and shout yourself a Vanilla Slice from Bourkies Bakehouse at the end of town. You have done about 25 km. Get the train back to town.
Waypoints
Hesket boundary track and Mountains road
No signage about and gate looks to be permanently open
Lions Head road firebreak
After heading up Hesket boundary track you come to a locked gate and greeted with sunshine and space. Time for a cuppa. You could proceed about 800m down the track to Days picnic ground where there are tables and toilets.
Days Picnic ground
beautiful spot with nobody around. I imagine this gets pretty busy given vehicular access
Junction of Camels Hump
Junction of Camels Hump and mrwt to the Mcgregors picnic ground and onwards to the cross
Junction mrwt & barbours chute trk
Junction mrwt & barbours chute trk. I take the lower one (Barbours) as I wend my way to Braemar college grounds to get to the road.
Junction Barbours & horse track
You have to go by feel. I took this one as it had a downward feel to it. Track tightens up.
Braemar Water tanks
When you get to the water tanks head down into college grounds. skirt the boundary on the left hand side
Graham Brock Resevoir
I veered a bit to much to the left and stumbled into this statutory property. There are no signs indicating you shouldn't be there but these days you probably shouldn't be there. My GPS track indicates going a hard left, If I was to do it again I would go right back towards the college and hit the Mt Macedon road.
Wire fence
I eventually got out of the property by stradling this wire fence then followed the drive way to the right out to the road.
Bourkies
When you roll into town, there are many places to get a feed. I only had eyes for the bourkies bakehouse trifecta. Sausage Roll, Vanilla slice and long black.
