Outport Trail Lost Sections

Not more than 20 years ago, Outport Trail in Terra Nova National Park went beyond its current end point at South Broad Cove (see reference links below). In the past the trail continued for about 29 kilometers, first along the coast; through Lion's Den and Park Harbor, then turned west overland to Ochre Hill.

About 1/2km north of the fire tower at Ochre Hill, there was an option to turn North for about 5.5km to join back with the trail at kilometer 1.5 just outside Newman Sound Campground, to complete a loop hike. There were also other trails to viewpoints and areas of interest accessible as part of Outport Trail.

Note that this track is based on a hike to find remnants of those lost sections. Most of the trail was identified with trail markers, but some of it was not found (pictures with GPS coordinates below).

Specifically, the 5.5km section linking Ochre Hill to trail km #1.5 (outside Newman Sound Campground) was not located, and is represented here as a fairly straight 2.5km track.

The track is provided here for it's historical significance and is not intended for anyone looking for an "on trail" hike.
