(Start) Go down to the beach and, negotiating successive low groynes, walk west, the easiest walking being on the sand revealed by the ebbing tide. At West Runton Gap (an exit if necessary), cross a low break in the high groyne, beyond which the beach's character abruptly alters. Seaweed-smothered flint nodules litter the lower beach and a chalk pavement towards the head now offers the best passage. Further along, a wooden staircase provides a second escape, but otherwise continue to Sheringham, where steps rise onto the promenade (2).

Climb the drive from the top of the steps and go left beside a putting green to join the coast path onto Beeston Bump - one of Norfolk's highest coastal points and manned as a lookout during the last war, it offers a grand view. Continue downhill to the edge of a caravan park and turn from the coast. Cautiously cross the railway line and follow a track to the main road (3).

Cross left to a drive and then go right, passing Hall Farm and a campsite. A track continues towards Beeston Regis Heath. At a junction with Calves Well Lane, go right, skirting a cottage to continue along a hedged track. Ignore a broad grass trail to the left, instead taking a lesser path further along. Climb along a wooded fold onto the heath and keep right, soon reaching a splendid cairned viewpoint (4).

Retrace your steps to a fork and bear right to a fence in the trees. Follow it left to a junction at its corner. Walk ahead on a narrow path, keeping left where it then splits. A clear path runs through the wood for nearly 1/2 mile to a cross-path. There, move left to find a broader track. The route lies to the right, but you might first wander from the trees to enjoy the view. After 1/4 mile, the track passes a small National Trust car park at the high point of Beacon Hill, beside which are distinctive earthworks, the 'Roman Camp' (5).

Although the embankments are old, their Roman association is a Victorian fantasy to embellish a local beauty spot with a hint of mystery. The hill however was an excellent viewpoint and a signal beacon is known to have existed from the 14th century. Follow the drive to a lane and cross to the track opposite. Fork left to West Runton Camping and Caravanning Club Site, where light refreshments are available. Continue past the entrance to a 4-way junction and turn left, watching for a stile on the left at the edge of the trees. Over this, head to another stile at the end of the path and walk along a meadow, leaving towards its far end over a stile on the right onto a track (6).

Go right and then fork left. Cross a bridge spanning the railway and follow the track to the road. Walk right, into East Runton, turning left back to the beach car park.
