Itinerary description
In Greek, Μαντείο του Σελινέου Απόλλωνα; in Italian, Oracolo di Apollo Selineo.
A very short walk through an unsigned footpath with overhanging vegetation in some points.
The footpath leads to the few ruins of the sanctuary of Apollo Selineos or Selinuntius near Rovies, as reported by Strabo in the tenth book of his Geography. The sanctuary, discovered by chance about twenty years ago, was home to an oracle, and was built along the mythological itinerary followed by Apollo from Mount Olympus to Delphi, where the god eventually established his main sanctuary. The name Selineos/Selinaios or Selinuntius comes from the Greek word σέλινον (sélinon, celery in English), a plant which grows on humid and swampy meadows or along the banks of the rivers, and was associated with the cult of death in antiquity.
From the sanctuary, the walker can enjoy a nice view of the Gulf of Euboea.

I tried to follow this path in July 2024, but it was practically impossible. The grass has grown very tall and has thorns, making it difficult to navigate in shorts; appropriate clothing is necessary. I heard from a local that the path was opened around 2020 by the Rovies trade association and has not been maintained since.
