Note géographique et géologique
En amont de la vallée de la Lède, le village est limitrophe du Périgord noir.
L'argile kaolinique de l'Eocène inférieur (-53Ma env.) affleure par certains endroits et offrira au jeune Bernard Palissy des argiles pour confectionner ses premières céramiques.

Note historique
Bernard Palissy est probablement né au hameau de Saint-Avit vers 1510. C'est un savant autodidacte, un potier, un émailleur, verrier, peintre et écrivain de l'école de la Renaissance. Il sera victime de l'édit contre les protestants signé par Henri II au château d'Ecouen qu'il a, ironie du sort, décoré. Mais ses protecteurs parviennent à lui épargner la prison. De nouveau, il est arrêté en 1588 comme huguenot et finira ses jours à la Bastille. Après avoir fait ses gammes dans la poterie traditionnelle saintongeaise, cet alchimiste de la céramique parvient enfin à (re)découvrir son Graal: l'émail jaspé.

Upstream of the valley of the Led, the village is bordering the Périgord Noir. The kaolinic clay of the early Eocene (-53Ma approx.) outcrops in certain places and offered to the young Bernard Palissy raw material to make his first ceramics.

Historical notes
Bernard Palissy was probably born in the hamlet of Saint-Avit towards 1510. He is a self-taught scholar, a potter, an enameler, a glass-maker, a painter and a writer of the Renaissance school. He has been the victim of the Edict against the Protestants signed by Henry II at the Ecouen Castle, which he, ironically, decorated. However, his protectors manage to spare him prison that time. Once again, he was arrested in 1588 as a Huguenot and died at the Bastille jail. After learning the traditional saintongeaise pottery, this alchemist of ceramics finally managed to (re)discover his Grail: the enamel jasper.
