Itinerary description
Nice hike, much less traveled than ones in the Galena area (Jones, Whites, Thomas) but almost the exact same distance from Reno, NV. A lot of climbing, and you don't actually see the creek until the top.
Long route is gentler grade and sunnier with views of Washoe Lake. Short route is steeper and on shady side of hill. Not recommended in late spring when it is often verrry muddy.
This is a drought year, done June 27th. Ophir Creek is often an uncrossable raging torrent in spring.

Ophir Creek late June in drought year
In good snow pack years, Ophir will be a raging torrent here, basically uncrossable. Creek run through the middle of a granite boulder/rock garden. The few hundred feet running to this point is a narrow single track with rocks about 2 ft high on both sides.
