Itinerary description
On the trail of the wolf!
15 km, 4 hours, easy.
Start and finish in Persac (20 mins, bus available from L'Isle-Jordain)
The story goes that the last wolf in the area was shot in 1923 but this historic trail includes the Wolf Pit where the ripples caused by these wonderful animals can still be felt. The actual purpose of the Wolf Pit is lost in time but is assumed to be the drinking place of the pack. The wolf was present in the area and active enough to scare the population.
Part of the walk follows the old railway line between Lussac-les-Châteaux and Saint Saviol.
When passing through Persac, observe the roofs and walls of two middle ages fortified castles, "la Mothe" and "Brûlonnière" and also the chapel of Saint Honorat, an ancient place of pilgrimage where peasants prayed for the protection of their Herds. From the wolf? Of course!
We're not saying there are still wolves around .... just watch your back.
