Itinerary description
The complete Moor Route is a 200 kilometer long trail (partially also for bicycles) which connects the moorlands of the Eifel and the Ardennes. It might be rarely traveled in its entirety, but each part is very worthwhile. This is one of them.
The loop hike begins and ends at the Alten Gericht (old courthouse) outside Simmerath. There are three main highlights:
The first is a short walk along the Westwall, which was meant to be an obstacle for allied tanks in World War II. (It didn't function, and was no obstacle at all). Now, environmental programmes help to claim the area back and turn it into a wilderness. It is interesting to see how nature takes turns the concrete crazyness back into a jungle.
The second highlight leads the hiker near the old Venn Railroad (now the Ravel bicycle trail). After the construction of a high tension powerline a few years ago, measures were taken to restore the old moorlands. Signboards explain the story, and it is interesting to see progress.
Finally, the trail passes through the Kranzbruch - a typical peat of Venn area.
Along the trail is plenty of rare flora, including the gefleckte Kabenkraut, Storchschnabel, Blutwurz and - with a little bit of luck - the meat-eating onnentau.

Nice route and Easley to follow, just the staring point is a bit rare, we started the route near the swimming pool, better parking for the car. You acces the route then on the westwall.
