Itinerary description
Difficult and exhausting hike along the pipeline road/ camino de oleoducto. We decided to hike from Limon and organized a boat with the Embera Quera. Finding the trailhead is tricky as there are no markings or signs indicating a trail, Without GPS this would be impossible! The trail itself is terribly overgrown and not maintained in anyway. At times you can see the asfalt. There are dozens of fallen trees, and you have to deviate from the trail/route constantly.
The first 5 km from the Trailhead to Agua Salud is tough going there are several bridges that are not safe to cross so there several shallow river crossings with steep inclines. We had ropes but didn't use them. Agua Salud is a derelict park ranger station.
From Agua Salud the trail gets even worse, we had to literally bushwack through secondary jungle growth for 5kms. Fallen trees, getting tangled in vines. It is easy to get completely lost, this section of the trail was the most exhausting and difficult, so you need to have good navigation skills and know how to use a GPS correctly. After Rio Sirystes the trail becomes relatively easy to follow, and the last 6 kms are an easy hike.
We started early leaving Panama City at 5am and arriving at the trailhead at 7.30am. we walked at a good pace only stopping for short breaks, but the condition of the trail made it very slow going and we took 10 hours to complete. It is important to start early so as to complete the trail in daylight. The group I went with had experience on this trail. I would definitely NOT attempt this without an experienced guide or at the very least someone who has done this before.
