Itinerary description
This a beautiful hike in the Shenandoah National Park, close to Madison, VA. The hike was done on June 1st, beginning of summer.
It is a very pleasing hike with beautiful views and gorgeous woods. We started the hike at the Old Rag Parking area and walked along the Ridge Trail to a rather technical area of rock scrambling, nothing very difficult but it does take some effort, particularly for those not used to rocks, a total of 3.6 miles. The summit has an incredible 360 degree view of the beautiful surroundings which on a clear day are a delight. We came down the Saddle Trail, a 5.1 mile hike back to the parking area.
The NPS classifies this hike as “Very Strenuous” however, aside form the rock scrambling which is a little less than a mile, the hike is moderate. There is no water on the route, so please bring enough!
