Old man of Storr (The Storr) - Isle of Skye (An Stòr from Norse)

The carpark is located right by the main road 6.8miles from Portree which will take about 10 minutes to drive. The carpark is not that big so fills up quickly mid-summer, there is an extended layby to the main road that continues from the carpark entrance. Actually there is a cafe in this second one, however there are toilets in the first one. Also, the car park is not free, you'll need 3 pounds (cash or card).

Be realistic!! Thos first pictures are the ones you will find everywhere online; however, as you may know this is north Scotland, and it's usually cloudy, windy, foggy and rainy, so be prepared not to see it, be prepared to get wet and have a slippery path. If you are lucky and you get a sunny day, would be awsome.

At the end of the carpark there is a wooden gate. Head though the gate and follow the gravel path that curves up the hillside. You will see the remains of the recent fallen trees.
After a while the gravel path splits. Both options re-join higher up the slope, so we chose the right one to go up and the other one to come down. Remember, the shorter, the steeper... The Path is steep in places but clear in direction. You will reach a wooden gate, pass through and follow thje path as is zig zags up the hill, reaching another woodend gate. This gate is double height, designed to keep deer out.

As you continue uphill the ‘Old Man’ will be on your far right side. Ahead are many other rock formations.
The path now turns right to face the Old Man and continues with more uneven rock steps. Now on the final approach to ‘the Old Man’ the path curves uphill heading for the foot of the rock pinnacle.

The foot of the Old Man becomes very steep and a bit of a scramble, not suitable for all. If you wish to get to the very top then continue with care. From the top the views are fantastic, look out to sea over the Islands of Raasay and Rona and then beyond to the mainland. Looking South there are views of the ‘Storr Lochs’ and then on to Portree and the Cuiliin Hills.

We had one of sections temporary closed for reparing, but there are some others that can be used.

El aparcamiento está situado junto a la carretera principal, a 6,8 millas de Portree, a unos 10 minutos en coche. El parking no es tan grande, por lo que se llena rápidamente a mediados del verano, hay un área de descanso prolongada hasta la carretera principal que continúa desde la entrada del parking. En realidad, hay una cafetería en este segundo, sin embargo, hay baños en el primero. Además, el parking no es gratuito, necesitarás 3 libras (efectivo o tarjeta).

Esas primeras imágenes son las que encontrarás en todas partes en internet; sin embargo, como te puedes imaginar, esto es el norte de Escocia, y generalmente está nublado, con viento, con niebla y lluvia, así que prepárate para no verlo, prepárate para mojarte y tener un camino resbaladizo. Si tienes suerte y tienes un día soleado, pues genial.

Al final del aparcamiento hay una puerta de madera. Dirígete a través de la puerta y sigue el camino de grava que sube por la ladera. Verás los restos de los árboles caídos recientemente.
Después de un rato, el camino de grava se divide. Ambas opciones vuelven a unirse más arriba en la ladera, por lo que elegimos la derecha para subir y la otra para bajar. Recuerda, cuanto más corto, más empinado... El camino es empinado en algunos lugares pero claro en la dirección. Llegarás a una puerta de madera, la atraviesas y sigues el camino que sube en zigzag por la colina, llegando a otra puerta de madera. Esta puerta es de doble altura, diseñada para mantener alejados a los ciervos.

A medida que sigues cuesta arriba, el "Old Man" estará en su extremo derecho. Más adelante hay muchas otras formaciones rocosas.
El camino ahora gira a la derecha para encarar al Old Man y continúa con más escalones irregulares de roca. Ahora, en la aproximación final a 'the Old Man', el camino se curva cuesta arriba en dirección al pie del pináculo rocoso.

El pie del Old Man se vuelve muy empinado y un poco revuelto, no apto para todos. Si deseas llegar a la cima, continúa con cuidado. Desde la cima, las vistas son fantásticas, mira hacia el mar sobre las islas de Raasay y Rona y luego hacia el continente. Mirando hacia el sur, hay vistas de 'Storr Lochs' y luego a Portree y Cuiliin Hills.

Tuvimos una de las secciones cerrada temporalmente por reparación, pero hay algunas otras que se pueden usar.
