Itinerary description
Feeling up for a challange? Check out our trail to Oaky Creek Lookout in Mapleton NP, which starts from the Kenilworth side, at Sam Kelly Rd. Park at the camping area at Gheerulla, and start your hike east along the Trail Bike Track. Caution- best to do this through the week when there are few bikes on the trail. The track has some very steep sections which are also topped with extremely slippery gravel. Follow the path for 3km until you can see it turns sharply left and it starts to head downward. At the point leave the trail bike track. You will find a faint trail up the ridge to the cliff line (and two caves) below the Oaky Creek Lookout. Go to the left of the cliff (east) and bush bash steeply upward (clockwise) until you hit the top of the ridge. There you will find a short track to the lookout. The views from the top are amazing. You get a 180 degree view from Kenilworth around to Eumundi, including Kenilworth Bluff, Mt Cooroora and Mt Cooroy. Hopefully the views will make the pain of the steep climb worth while. If you return by retracing your steps, it will be an 11km (return) hike. You can reduce the hard climb by just following the trail bike track all the whole way around to the lookout (instead of climbing up the ridge after 3km) but that will extend your hike to 22km (return).
