Itinerary description
The trail starts with great river and natural rock wall views, then climbs steadily through pine and oak woods, which is the last you see of the river. Next are views of Slug creek (much prettier than the name implies) until you cross it on a bridge. About the only distant views are at the top of the hill 3.3 mile in where we ate lunch. Most of the trail has a lot of tree cover and is on the north side of ridges which keeps it shady. Starting down the far side of the hill adds a scenic bridge that is a rerun from my hike “North Yuba Goodyears Bar upstream”. This hike was just after the snow melted so we had more water than usual in the creeks and the flooding river.
The trail is in good condition, has an easy dirt surface and is free of encroaching berries and poison oak. It cuts across fairly steep slopes and there are a few spots where the trail becomes narrow with little margin for error so I’m rating it moderate instead of easy.
The trailhead has a medium sized parking lot, restroom, trail sign and no fees. Highway 49 to Downieville runs next to the river for quite a ways and is very scenic. The roads from there to the parking lot are paved.
