Itinerary description
Nice trail, pretty sections, some creeks and a bridge, but not many distant or river views because you can’t see the forest for the trees. A steady hill with a moderate 10% slope peaks half way to Downieville. Probably more popular for bikes than hiking. Heading up the hill there was an obstacle course of trees across the trail but on our return trip chainsaw angles had cleared a lot of them. We met someone from Downieville Outfitters raking leaves off the trail and planning to return with a bigger saw so that should not be a problem much longer. There was no poison oak in the trail and the few encroaching berries are trimmed for the moment.
My GPS was a bit off at the start, there is only one trail, and I don’t see any side trails to the river.
No fees or facilities. Good roads get you to a small unsigned parking area near the trailhead, which is labeled. Don’t be fooled by the “No Turnaround” sign as you start down Old Toll Bridge road unless perhaps you are towing a trailer.
