Itinerary description
Nisevacka Klisura is a canyon just behind the village of Nisevac, outside Svrljig. It is a real hidden gem. The route takes you into the canyon area, to a lovely pool where you can fish or swim, and then to a great lookout point. On the way back you hike along an old Roman road. The whole hike is very beautiful.
The hike I have recorded here is not hard or long, but if you're unlucky, it could be dangerous. The trail starts on the train tracks. We asked locals, looked online for info, all said the same thing: walk along the train tracks... This takes you through tunnels through the rocky canyon - the same tunnels trains go through. There is no timetable information available in the area (one old wooden board on a falling down station house has the 2019 timetable in Cyrillic). Locals were walking along the tracks too, but still!
The tunnels we went through were short and if you keep your eyes and ears open, you will have plenty of time to get out of the way of any train that comes along. But the marked hiking trail appears to go beyond where we went, through a long tunnel deep into the rock. This could be very dangerous - I think it used to be that there were no trains for a while due to upgrading works, which might have made this okay. Locals also told us that they are currently still doing works, so it's mostly only infrequent maintenance vehicles on the tracks - but we saw two in two hours, so you definitely need to be careful. From a safety perspective, I do not endorse going on the tracks at all - do this at your own risk.
If you want to avoid train tracks altogether, go in and out of the canyon on the old Roman road, which is the second half of our loop. It's very beautiful, as is every part of this short hike.
Other things to know: there is also the option to cross the little stream flowing into the pool and go into the canyon through narrow rock formations - but we couldn't cross the river without getting our shoes wet and it was a bit cold, so we didn't do this on our hike. Next time...
Enjoy this hike - there are ways to do it safely and it is a stunning little pocket of Serbia.

to the left about 60 metres before you reach the pond is a stream. You can cross this and after about ten minutes you apparently reach a place where you can go into the narrow rock formations of the canyon. Next time...
