Itinerary description
The hike starts at parking Danzley (free parking) at the edge of Nideggen. From here you go back to the L11 road, cross it into the woods and follow a path which takes you below Nideggen along a series of sandstone viewing platforms. The day I did this hike, the valley was shrouded in mist, and the views were initially bad, but gradually improved to first show the top of the hills just above the mist on both sides of the Rur to later show only mist on the valley floor and finally a view without mist (see the pictures). After Hirtzley you encounter 2 more viewing points before you get to Christinenley. On this side of the hill you have good views of Burg Nideggen as well. After Christinenley you go below the sandstone pillars of the Hindenburgtor and pass a few more viewing platforms. The path ends up at a broader track, turns northwest, and then you follow another path towards Rath (track 42). You pass here below the Kickley sandstone pillars. Alternatively, you could choose to keep to the right to get to more viewpoints on top of the sandstone rocks (see waypoint). The track descends slowly until you get to the Panoramaweg. You sharply turn right here to climb to the magnificent viewpoint at Eugenienstein. From here you walk to another viewing point with cabin at Kuhkopf, and then continue through the forest towards Engelsblick cabin and viewing point. Just before Engelsblick there is another viewing point of Obermaubach and Untermaubach on your left. You descend to the Panoramaweg, a broad dirt track that takes back south with occasional views of Obermaubach and its reservoir. You pass the Waldkapelle and shortly before you come back to the point where you climbed towards Eugenienstein before, you turn right and descend toward the Rur, partly on the edge of a corn field. In the valley, you cross the railway track and then follow a cycling path across a bridge and through fields in the the valley towards Gut Kallerbend, on the other side of another bridge, if you wish to have something to eat or drink. If not, you take a small path to the right of the bridge and climb this path and a few broader dirt tracks and (semi-)paved roads to the village of Bergstein. Here you circle the Burgberg and climb the Krawutschketurm where you have a great view all around across the Eifel. After completing the circle, you take a path towards a picnic area, and then continue on your way down towards Zerkall on the Rur. Initially you walk on broad tracks through the woods, then descend sharply on a small path, and then follow the edge of a small valley to Zerkall. You cross the village to the Rur bridge, cross the railway, and then start your ascent back to the starting point on the Wingertsweg, a broader track which takes you to a hairpin on the L11. Here you stay to the right of Hof Hubertusmühle, and follow smaller paths back to Danzley crossing the L11 twice more.
You can eat and drink something at Gut Kallerbend, which is conveniently located at about two-thirds of the route. Nearby the starting point you will also find opportunities in Nideggen.
Waypoints
Bridge at Zerkall
Bridge across the Rur in Zerkall village. There is also a station closeby.
Christinenley
Again a viewing platform on sandstone rocks, giving you a view west. The mist prohibited large part of the view during my trip. The Burgberg across the valley just peaked above the mist.
Climb to Bergstein
Here starts the climb to Bergstein. You follow a small track directly besides the bridge. Later, you walk on a broader dirt track and close to Bergstein the dirt track becomes asphalt. On the way, you have good views backwards towards Rath.
Cyclepath
Here you enter a paved cycle path which crosses a bridge and then continues towards Gut Kallerbend.
Eugenienstein
Excellent viewing platform of sandstone rocks. You can see the Burgberg and the Rur valley towards the south.
Gut Kallerbend
This is popular restaurant, ideal for this tour as it is about two-third of the way. You cross the bridge across the Rur river if you want to go here. Otherwise you turn right just before you cross the bridge.
Hof Hubertusmühle
Here you find Hof Hubertusmühle on two hairpins in the L11. From here you follow a path back to the parking lot, crossing the L11 twice.
Krawutschketurm
At the top of the Burgberg you will find Krawutschketurm, a viewing tower giving you excellent views across the Eifel. You can also see Hambach lignite mine in the distance.
Kuhkopf
Another viewpoint here at Kuhkopf where you can see the Burgberg, Obermaubach and the reservoir. There is also a cabin here.
Path below Kickley Rocks
Here you keep left for the path below Kickley Rocks. You can also turn right here and keep to the left for more standstone viewing platforms.
Picnic Area
Picnic area with a view. Just before this point there is a war monument, and you have a good view towards the reservoir through a gap in the trees.
Valley Bergstein-Zerkall
From here you follow a small steep valley between Bergstein and Zerkall.
Viewpoint 1
Viewing platform of sandstones. The mist prohibited the view during my trip.
Viewpoint 2
Viewpoint on sandstone rocks, looking west. The mist prohibited large part of the view during my trip. The Burgberg across the valley just peaked above the mist.
Viewpoint 5
This sandstone platform is less well marked. It views Obermaubach and Untermaubach.
Waldkapelle
Small chapel on the Panoramaweg with a picnic table, a view, and a memorial stone.
Wingertsweg
Here starts the Wingertsweg, a broad forest track, taking you back to the L11. At the start you have a good view of Gut Kallerbend
Bergstein
Here you enter the village of Bergstein with a church, good views, and a parking lot.
Descent to Rur
Here you leave the Panoramaweg, and descend towards the Rur, first on a wide forest road, and then on smaller paths on the edge of a few fields.
Panoramaweg
Here you enter the Panoramaweg, a wide dirt road keeping you at approximately the same altitude past Obermaubach and the reservoir.
Path into the woods
Here you enter a path into the woods from the L11 road, which takes you below Nideggen village along a lot of viewpoint on sandstone rocks.
Route 17
After Kuhkopf you follow route 17 to Engelsblick. This route takes you through forest.
Route 42 bifurcation
Here you follow the small track of route 42, rather than left the hairpin of the dirt road marked with a.o. route 7 and 3.

Bedankt Stievvv, voor je trailrunner blik! Met een kleine 4 km asfalt weggetjes valt het dacht ik wel mee, maar dat is dan maar hoe je het bekijkt... Eerste deel is inderdaad het mooist...
