The Arthur Pass National Park was one of the first in New Zealand. In the heart of the Southern Alps, the park divides the humid western regions of the island from the flat, dry plains to the east. Our plan for that day was to ascend Avalanche Peak, one of the most famous ascents in the area, but the weather, rain and fog, made us change our mind. Instead, we saw in the easy walk of Castle Hill an alternative, since, being located on the East side of the Cordillera, the weather was much better.
Castle Hill or the hill of Castile, is a formation of limestone that was discovered on the surface. It is located on private land, in the middle of pastures, and can be covered in an easy walk of 1 to 2 hours. There is no marked path, on the contrary, you can go through the areas you see most convenient in search of the rock formations that you like the most.
The area also has some sections equipped to practice sport climbing, as well as bouldering. Please, before climbing, I recommend reading the regulation of the practice on the DOC website.
Very close to Castle Hill, you also have the Cave Stream track, another interesting speleology activity. Unfortunately, the corresponding equipment is needed to carry out the activity, so we could not ...
