Neue Traunsteiner Hütte

This 19 km beautiful hike starts in Reith from a small parking lot along the Donnersbach river. From there a quiet forest road leads upwards to the Alpasteig, a steep staircase-like rocky path to the Alpa Alm. You can enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the dark pinewood and finally arrive at the Alpa Alm. On the left side of the wooden hut there's a wooden table and a bench where you can take a rest, eat something and enjoy the really amazing mountain views.
The path continues to the right, steep and all the way up to the Reiter Alm. From the top (Guggenbichl) you will get an amazing panorama of the Reiter Alm and in the far distance the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte.
The walk to the hut over the plateau is easy and straightforward.
Take some time at the terrace in front of the hut (if the weather is fine) and enjoy some of the delicious mountain soups.
After the break I follow route 474 to the Schrecksattel. This area is also used by the military so you might see some military activity there. The road continues to the Schrecksteig, which is a narrow rocky path steeply down to the forest. The scenery along the Schrecksteig is really breathtaking and takes you along gigantic rock walls. It is one of the most spectacular routes in Tirol.
At a certain point it is possible to follow a shortcut to reach the 'Route der Klammen' back to the starting point in Reith. From the Schrecksteig turn left and follow a small forest road for about 10 minutes till you reach a dirt road. Turn right and another 5 minutes further turn left to another dirt road. From here prepare for a very long and lonesome walk through the woods until you see a marked mountain bike path on your left side. Follow this path along the Eibkendlbach river until you're on the road to Reith (Route Der Klammen).
It is very beautiful but it might feel much longer than it really is.

Tips:
This area of the Chiemgauer Alps still looks very quiet. You don't meet many hikers on the trekking routes in the low season. Only the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte is quite busy because here several routes join together.

Make sure you take enough water and some energy food because the road between the Schrecksteig and Reith can feel very long and you will find nothing to eat and drink along the way.
