Itinerary description
The hike starts at the mouth of the Skútuá-river, close to the end of the airstrip. After about 1 km the path leads to the Evanger ruins, a herring factory and a cluster of houses, that was ruined in an avalanche 1919. The path along the shore is very wet and it is unavoidable to get wet feet. Today (3rd July) there is extreme melt of snow in the mountains and rivers and moors are bursting with water. At the lighthouse Selvíkurviti it is a good idea to have some rest, take off the shoes and look at the birds. Today there was a group of harlequin ducks close to the shore, also some black guillemot, long-tailed duck and of course lots of eider-ducks. Now the difficult part begins, passing the canyons and slides. The path is mostly invisible and it is important to follow the track to be sure to pass the canyons and slides where they are passable. In some canyons there are chains to assist the descent and ascent. Then it is better to fasten the poles on the rucksack and have both hands free.
When (and if ;-)) you make it to the Siglunes peninsula, follow the road to the lighthouse and after that a well visible path that leads to Nesdalur valley. Notice the U-form of the glacier carved valley. Nesdalur is long and mostly covered with grass. Noticable is the huge amount of ferns in the bottom of the valley. Then you head to the Kálfskarð-mountain pass in 450 m. Today there was still relatively much snow in that height. Now the path is again visible and leads to a small lake and continues down again to the lighthouse at Selvík.
