Panagia Vigliotissa

Church nameday 8. Sept. and mother's day (2nd Sunday in May) Panagia Vigliotissa is a former monastery in position Vigli within the region of the village Voulismeni, province Mirabelo. The monastery operated from 1594 to the 18th century, but today its buildings have been completely destroyed, except for the temple and a cistern. The surrounding area has been transformed into a beautiful park, where a monument to the Mother has been placed. The cruciform restored cathedral of the monastery is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (celebrates on September 8) and dates back from around 1300, when it may have functioned simply as a temple. At the entrance there is a date 1605 which refers to the restoration of the temple by the nun Magdalene Strianopoula. Externally it is adorned with decorative round plates (pinakia), while the horizontal long narrow brick zone created outside the sanctuary is of special interest. Pashaligo

PASHALIGO, a small grove located southwest of Neapolis on the northern slopes of Mount Cavalara. The existence of the forest is related to the history of the area, which took its name from the Venetian feudal lord Fillipo Pasqualigo, who lived in a tower built here. Pasqualigo built irrigation ditches to supply his tower with water from the local Vigli spring. Later the locals used the irrigation ditches by building water mills along them and settled in the area, developing the settlement of Kainourgio Chorio which later developed into Neapolis. The mills still stand in the heart of the forest but have been severely damaged by time. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the grove has been a favorite nature destination for the residents of Naples, as the water turned the area into a little paradise. The wooded area, the gurgling waters and the picturesque mills make up another wonderful setting. The area is a remarkable place of beauty in the dry area of northern Mirabello and its significant biodiversity has increased the ecological interest and aesthetic value of the area. Vegetation is typical of Cretan limestone soils but is particularly developed due to the abundance of water. It consists of tall bushes, trees and large plane trees, oaks, cypresses, olive groves, lemon trees and several endemic plants. (cretanbeaches.com)

Fraro Monastery

FRARO MONASTERY, a former Franciscan monastery, origin of pope Alexander V., few footsteps behind Neapoli’s secondary school, now overgrown by the local vegetation. Monastery of St. Anthony Fraro (Neapolis) This was a Latin, romancatholic monastery, dedicated to St. Anthony. Its name derives from the latin word "Frari" (Fratres minores - the least brothers, as the Franciscan monks are called in humility). Christoforos Bouondelmonti, who visited the area of Karon, makes the first reference to this monastery in 1415. According to a written old tradition, Petros Filagris who was elected Pope of Rome with the name Alexandros the 5th at the great schism, originated from this monastery in 1330.

without Photo: NISPITAS Monastery of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
A great feature from the period that the monastery was alive is the beautiful anastatic transom of the sanctuary. The Church was full of wall paintings. The name of the monastery is found in a document of 1607 but unfortunately the monastery was abandoned during the Ottoman occupation.

Around the chapel there are some ruins of the old monastery complex. The monastery, celebrating on August 6th, was built during the Venetian Era, probably after 1553, next to the the village of Nispitas. The church is arch-vaulted and is supported by buttresses. The walls of the church are covered with some amazing stone carvings, typical of the Venetian period. Moreover, the frescoes of the church did not survive the Turkish Era, but they are mentioned in very old documents.

optional: Holy Monastery of Koufi Petra
The female monastery of Koufi Petra (Hollow Stone) is built to the west and at a close distance from the monastery of Kremasta, also on the slopes of Mount Kavallara. The only mention of the monastery in the sources is the indirect reference in a contract of the monastery of Areti, in the year 1630, about the “place of the All-Holy Theotokos of Koufi Petra.” The abandoned –for an unknown period of time– monastery was reconstituted in 1866 by the nun, Eirini Chlapoutaki, sister of the then bishop of Petra, Meletios. Built in gradients because of the sloping ground, the monastery has the twin-naved cathedral at its highest point. The north aisle, dedicated to the Annunciation (March 25), was founded in the 19th century while the south, dedicated to the Birth of the Theotokos (September 8) was built in 1996. The remaining buildings also date to the 19th and, primarily, to the 20th centuries as a result of the expansion and the increased needs of the monastery.
