Itinerary description
Nateby Common (Tailbridge Hill) and Nine Standard Riggs — North Pennines AONB
This was a lovely short hike today just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park near Kirby Stephen. It was to take in Nine Standard Riggs, a summit with nine rather large, quirky cairns whose purpose is uncertain, and not recorded. They do make for a nice photo opportunity though, and it was another nice day. A super nice 10-kilometre, 300-metre height gain hike done in two hours.
This is a popular hiking route with a decent start point car park. It is on good footpaths, and it has fine views of the surrounding countryside. Of course, the highlight is to visit and see the Nine Standards. This route takes in a detour to the west to take in Nateby Common before heading up to Nine Standard Riggs on good footpaths. It can be boggy in places, but nowhere is it that bad. Don't forget to head over to the trig pointed top which marks the top of this lovely little peak.
Parking: Nice gravel car park at the start point. There are other nearby parking alternatives closer to where the route goes onto the hill proper on grass.
Route Description: Good paths in the main, a bit wet in places. The quirky cairns make for good photos.
Route Statistics: A 10 km hike with only 300 metres of height gain done in 2 hours, 20 minutes.
