Itinerary description

Vasota is a fort located in Koyna Tiger Reserve Forest. Like other forts at the boundary between Deccan Plateau and Konkan, the climb from Deccan side is about 500m, and it has vertical cliffs on the western side - very scenic and fiery.

The shiva temple at Nageshvar is at a neighboring peak, about one and half hour from Vasota. Nageshvar-Vasota trail is beautiful traverse with steep drop of 1500ft on the one side, not for those faint of heart. Trail then enters deep jungle. You cross couple of landslide regions. Then there is a junction of the trail that comes straight from the boat landing. Continuing on to the fort, gradient becomes lot harder for the last half hour of the climb.

The trail head to Vasota-Nageshvar is accessible by an hour and half of boat ride in Koyna backwater. We started the trek at 8:30. First destination was Nageshvar. First half of the trail goes through stream bed full of large rocks. Although the grade is modest, it is not a fun walk. Definitely avoid descending from this side. Gradient picks up later as you get closer to Nageshvar.

Descent from the fort to the boating dock took us two hours at leisurely pace.
Forest department expects you to return by the last boat timing (around 5?). Visitors not allowed to hang around at night.

On the whole, this is a good trek with beautiful scenery and moderately strenuous, no technical parts.Tip : Recommend two litres of water and buttermilk. There was flowing water around maruti temple. Take the earliest boat - we got one at 7am.
