Itinerary description
This is Mayo's highest mountain peak and in the province of Connacht.
Park the car on the R335 (Louisburgh to Leenane road) just between Doo Lough and Glenullin Lough where the walk starts.
The route is boggy at the start and crosses some rough ground and continues with a steep climb ( The ramp) to Ben Bury. From here we reach the col below Mweelrea's summit and then continue an easy climb on grass land to the summit of Mweelrea.
The views along the hike of Ben Gorm, Croagh Patrick, and the ocean views including Carrickwee beach and Inisturk island are fab.
The return route from Mweelrea passes through Ben Bury. There is a cairn with a cross at the summit of Ben Bury.
The steep descent back to Lough Doo is via the Ramp. The top of the ramp is marked by a cairn which is a reference point that indicates our return route for the descent.
