Itinerary description
Meaning of the word Musala is "place for payer" or "near to God". No wonder highest peak on Balkans have the name that best describes it.
This trail from Borovec is long one, luckily it has plenty of mountain huts and shelters that can provide safety in need.
Last one is basicaly bellow Musala Peak on Ledeno Ezero and there is also shelter on the top, which was closed in time of our visit.
One thing you have to pay attention on this route is many marcations leading on different sides of mountain, basically to the many lakes in this area.
Our ascent to Musala started at Borovec arround midnight. Before down we reached Aleko lake and mountain huts where we had longer pause as we were waiting for the light for the part of the route leading trough rocks.
Trail is very well trassed trough the terrain. It is safe. There are safety cords on places where needed.
I would range this trail's difficulty under moderate, only the lenght may be challenging.
There is easier way to get to Musala.there is a lift from Borovec that will take you Jastrebetz Peak for 25 lev. (18EUR) and lift is working only for weekends in summer (you can check this on their page https://www.borovets-bg.com/en/page/info/lifts-trails/lifts
Using lift on descent is free of charge ;)
Note to ones who would try night ascent: wear winter jacket, gloves and hat as durring night temperature is very low and windshield makes it even colder. Long pants are also must for night time hike.
