Itinerary description
Mt. Tabor is located with the Northern Range on the island of Trinidad. This hike can start at the corner of St. John Road and the Eastern Main Road in St. Augustine. This would involve a walk up to Mount Saint Benedict Monastery past the art gallery. You can elect to travel up to the Abbey of Mount Saint Benedict and then start hiking from there. The trail starts at the cellphone tower past the art gallery. It start off quite steep but there are points along the ascent where you have opportunities for rest. There are exceptional views along the way of the Caroni plains and also of the San Juan area well into Port of Spain. Once at the col there are very good views of the Maracas St. Joseph Valley as far as Lloango Village and Mt. El Tucuche. Past the col there is a short trek through very dense forest to the top of Mt. Tabor. The ruins of the structure built by a Benedictine Monk still stands there. The trail continues past the ruins and loops back to the Abbey of Mount Saint Benedict. There is a further option of continuing along the ridge all the way to the Caura Valley and Caura River. That segment is a bit more challenging than the first part of the hike...
