Itinerary description

From www.islandhikers.com

Mt. Catherine situated on the western side of Tucker Valley and overlooking the Chaguaramas Golf Course is the tallest peak at (1768 feet or 539 metres) on the Chaguaramas Peninsula. At the top, a distinguishable landmark seen from miles around is the large Circular Radar Antenna that resembles that of a giant football and use by the Airport Authority as a tracking station.

Residing in the tropical evergreen forest of the valley, are the howler monkeys that live in groups of 6 to 15 animals. They can be seen swinging on trees tops around the Golf Course in search of food. These monkeys are known for their loud howls which can be heard as far as three miles in the dense forest. In 1941, the Americans leased Chaguaramas for 99 years to be used as a naval base and throughout the forest there are dilapidated concrete structures of World War 11 Bunkers. The Chaguaramas Development Authority oversees the landscape and conduct daily tours to various destinations.

The journey, which begins at the Golf Course, is a steep, almost vertical climb, and depending on one’s fitness will take an average of 1-11/2 hours to reach the crest. Along the way, the trail passes an old tonka bean plantation, and within the surrounding area, there is Edith Falls with an altitude of 180 metres. This shower-like falls best visited during the rainy season when the water pressure is heavier. The return route is a downhill walk on the 8km Mt. Catherine Private Road. The trip continues along the Tucker Valley Main Road for a further 7km. Bring along at least one litre of water, a hat for sunshade and light snacks.
