Itinerary description
An extremely easy-to-follow trail thru the Willoughby State Forest in the Northeast Kingdom area of Vermont. Lake Willoughby is the closest attraction. There are many campsites, both for RVs and tents, all around the lake area.
The trail ascends from a trailhead just south of the lake to the summit of Mt. Pisgah to the immediate east of the lake. The trail is well marked, and is an ascent nearly the entire way.
Due to the dense (dense to a desert dweller like me, anyway) woods and canopy, there aren't many opportunities for panoramas or vistas. However, where the forest does break and allow you to scope the scenery, is pretty impressive.
Easiest way to get to the trailhead is to take the Vermont 5A to just south of the lake. Look for a wide spot in the road on the east side of the highway. In a gravel turn-out, there will be a wooden sign and bulletin board. There's plenty of parking here and the trail begins immediately to the right of the sign.
I did this as an out and back with the baby strapped to me in a pack. You can also make it a loop by continuing north, over the peak, and descending back down to the 5A. You'll either need to roadwalk back to your car, or leave a second vehicle at your exit point.
