Itinerary description

Walking beech forests on Mt Pelion, above village of Agios Georgios. Description on www.pilionwalks.com walk number 4.

Waypoints

Eastern Refuge

The refuge is found by following an earth track from the main road between Ag Georgios and Pinakates. We used a 4x4 jeep to reach the refuse but walking from the main road would be about 45 minutes each way I guess.

At this point, our track is the one to the right and has a sign by EOS Volos. The point numbers refer to the description of the walk we were following from the site www.pilionwalks.com (walk 4)

Much logging activity is taking place, with many wood piles along forest tracks. Be careful to follow the route of the walk and not deviate on what looks like a clear path that is being used by the logging activity.

Straight ahead, ignore the arrow

A few meters from the previous waypoint we were confused by this arrow and followed it. This is a loggers path. So continue straight ahead hear and ignore this arrow.

We are back on the correct track. Here we ascend a rocky path that has plenty of red paint marks to help identify the route.

Some signs are no longer visible to read, but follow the path left at this point.

Logging activity may conceal way marks

In the high beech woods logging continues (although we saw no work activity). In winter the whole forest floor is covered in leaves and the path is not obvious. So the many red paint waymarks on trees are vital. In summer you may ask why so many but the answer is for the winter! When logging activity is blocking the path we were able to see our way through without difficulty.

This is really not difficult but just be careful of any slippery rocks.

Point 16 leave main track towards east shelter.

This narrow path leaving the forest road is very well marked. It is signposted 'eastern shelter' which is our finish point.

And finally, we head back to our start point along forest roads, a wonderful walk in autumn.
