Itinerary description
A mixture of trail and off-track walking including two approaches from Spicers Gap to Mt Mitchell. Both could be used to extend the Southern Main Range Traverse through to Cunningahm's Gap. The Western one (our descent route) is much easier. Starting on the Mt Mathieson trail until reaching the SE ridge of the East peak of the mountain. This ridge is scrubby in its lower sections followed by large stands of grass trees and then nice rain forest towards the summit. There are smaller bluffs lower down that can be bypassed West, followed by increasingly steep terrain. I got a bit lost on the terraces of steep cliffs towards the summit and needed to do a bit of backtracking until reaching the track from Cunningham's Gap. If in doubt traverse West towards the saddle. Following the main track we descended via a SW ridge from the West peak to connect up with some well maintained fire breaks back to the car. In the lower sections of our return route there were a number of running creeks with good water and campsites

Interesting circuit! Did you find any footpads coming down the SW ridge before the fire trails? Or was it all bush-bashing?
initially followed some lightly-tread track...then bush bash. Quite steep at times but easily traversed.
There is a footpad on the ridge, which I suspect connects to the Spicer Gap 4WD track but would go further to the West and cross private land. This route is mentioned in ‘Secrets if the Scenic Rim’. The we took is wholly on public land.
many many nettles on south side traverse of east peak; all south mt mitchell fire breaks are now neck high in green weed growth; thickest of all was the last 500m before spicers gap road
We did this trek on 11th Sept 21 starting from Spicers Gap campground anti-clockwise.
Walked along the Ridge line from Matheson to Mitchell, heavy overgrowth and would recommend a machete. The goat track around the southern side of Mitchell East is a bit sketchy but manageable and fun if you take it slow.
Followed a gully down the southern side of Mitchell West which eventually turned into and joined creeks.
WARNING: LOTS OF STINGING TREES! Would recommend wearing thicker clothes to cover skin. We got mauled by the trees and are now on struggle Street haha.
Great hike though! Thanks for the guide.
