Itinerary description

You can either just do the 6km (return) hike up to the 960m summit of Mt Maroon, or as we did, try the more challenging 8km route up past the caves on the northern side. From the Cotswold Rd car park, enter the National Park area and veer to the right of the main trail to follow an old forestry track west. Its a fairly flat walk for the firt 500m then turn left and start the steep climb toward the northern ridge. This takes you up to the large sandstone cave. It's a great spot to view all the hills and ranges to the north. From here, it is a tough rock scramble around and up to the first two peeks before decending back down to join the main trail 150m before the summit. From the summit you are given 360 degree views of Lamington NP through to Mt Barney, the length of Main Range and the Moogerah Peaks. A clear track leads you back down the steep decent to the start of your journey.

Great trail and spectacular scenery. Found the GPS error tricky with the cliffs and rock slabs as 5 metres to the left meant Spiderman skills and no footpad. Lost the footpad many times which made for a fair bit of backtracking but fantastic route through this country.

Hey sorry about the GPS error- I hadn’t noticed till you pointed it out. I have posted that on my FB Hike site (Take A Hike- SE Qld) so will have to remove as its obviously inaccurate. Thanks again for letting me know. 🙂
