Itinerary description
Was a difficult but rewarding hike! We started off first west of Mt Maroon to head to the caves, which is early on in the hike. Requires to go off-track and do a bit of bush bashing and rock scrambling up to the caves (definitely recommend hiking boots and a hiking pole/ stick to keep you steady). The views of the caves were fantastic and great spot to rest and have lunch. However, after the caves you’ll need to go west to head up towards the top of the mountain. That part is the most difficult as it’s fairly steep and can be a bit slippery with unsteady rocks and leaves and not a clear path. I definitely recommend having a hiking partner and gps so you don’t go too far off track. Once you head towards the top of the of the mountain, it gets a lot easier walking along the larger rocks and the views are spectacular and breathtaking. Heading up the summit requires some rock scrambling but gives you a 360 view of the mountain ranges. We then took the main track path down. It was quite easy to follow the path down sometimes as there were markers but at some points we went off track with false trails. So definitely have your gps handy. The main track down is fairly steep and there is a warning for rock fall so be careful and take your time. Definitely recommend for hikers with good fitness level. Definitely leave early because the hike takes 2hrs up and 2hrs down.
