Itinerary description
If you're looking for a nice steep walk in the forest, try this hike up to Mt Kandanga (560m elevation), 10km west of the small townshop of Imbil. The walk is along a forest road from Yabba Creek Rd, (near the Deer Park) and heads off through pine and hardwood country. It is possible to get to the top with a four wheel drive but we preferred to hoof it. The track starts off easy enough but soon gets very steep and makes its a great cardio workout. We walked from the foot of the mountain on a 12km circuit. The view from the summit is obscured by trees but you do get glimpes of beautiful hilly countryside and the cty of Gympie, in the distance. There is also a steel fire tower and communciations tower at the top. The walk back down along the ridge follows the western boundry of the forest. Its a slow trail down the range until you reach the last 1km, where the trail drops steeply and you need to approach with care.
