Itinerary description

A little bush bashing and rock climbing towards the end. No views from the top so get your views on the way up. Nice view of Lizard Rock on the way down to Sentinel Rock. Basic rock climbing skills needed to navigate the two cliff faces.

I’m wanting to do Doubletop and was wondering what the road conditions are like. Only have an Xtrail not a low range 4WD.

They have been logging extensively in the the area and the road was pretty good in the dry. The loggers were using conventional vehicles to go in although we used a mid range 4WD.

The road was great and very dry. Easily doable in a 2wd. Had a great day on Doubletop. Thanks for your help.

I wanted to ask your opinion on the easiest and quickest way to reach the main range ridge, no matter where but possibly between Doubletop and Huntley. You guys seem to know the area. And how far can you drive up top swansfel rd? I need to do a water drop.
    Thank you.

Three options: 1. Continue on past the first campsite up the hill to the bush road that leads to Doubletop. 2. Continue past the first campsite (old caravan parked there) down to Lemon Tree campsite and cross the dry creek and follow the ridge(tapes) up to the saddle between DT and Huntley. Cannot drive very far past the caravan as the gate is locked. 3. From Lemon Tree continue on the road up to the saddle closer to Huntley. I’ve not done this way personally. All of these would require quite a bit of effort for a water drop. My experience from DT most of the way along the Rim to Huntley was very dry.
    Enjoy.

I can't really can't add any more to what's been said. That locked gate where the caravan is does impede further access to any of the potential areas for a water drop. The fire trail up to the saddle between Sentinel point and Huntly is pretty good if you could get the key.

Refer to my wiki trail. Park where I started but go in the opposite direction. Just past the locked gate you’ll come to a large grassed area, known as lemon tree. Leave my trail here and head up the fire road on the right, past the lemon tree. I think this road will take you most of the way to the rim where you could leave your drop. There are trails shown on Wiki for Huntley which detail this. The Swanfels road is totally passable with all the creeks dry as a bone. Fire danger in the area is very high. Are you doing the Spicers to Teviot trip?
