Like mentioned in the links above - it is better to take the steep way up and the easy way down - it's better for your knees.
The climb up is difficult and feels never ending.
There is no good view of the Columbia river gorge from the summit , the best views you'll get of the river are on the way up (and they are really worth it).
Most people reach Hamilton Mt. summit and go back the same way - but my recommendation is to go on with the hike into the woods, it's an awesome scenary - don't miss Hardy creek, the forest views are really great !!!
Note: don't follow the side branch I did on the entrance to Hardy creek - it's a mistake , I took the wrong turn -> when you get there (see point "Junction Hardy creek" ) be sure to take the left turn !!!!
