Itinerary description
Standard route up Mt Cougal to the East Peak via the entrance at the end of Garden of Eden Road. At the time of writing the vegetation in the lower section was fairly well cut back and easily passable. Would still strongly recommend long sleeves and pants to avoid itching... Navigation is straightforward - keep the border fence on your left (except for deviations to avoid windfall) until the fence stops and you hit a cliff, head right for ~50m and look for the stair like rock slab climb up to the entrance to the cave (which is obscured by a large boulder). Keep skirting to the right along the base of the cliff from here until you find the start of a fairly obvious, fairly simple scramble to the summit. Toughest part of hike is the steepness of the final walk along the border fence - moderate fitness is required and poles would assist.
Views from the summit are spectacular, and the side-trip to the cave was good fun - although it's no exaggeration that it's a very tight squeeze if you want to get through to the south face!
At the summit, we easily found the route to the West Peak and started down the first 200m of this for recon purposes, but turned back due to time - one for another day, potentially via Boyds Butte next time...
