Itinerary description
Starting from the Saddlebag Lake Campground, hiked on trail from the dam for about a mile to the Carnegie Institute Experimental Station. Trail became a use trail from here. Headed up the valley, gaining elevation slightly and climbed talus to Alpine lake. From the north end of Alpine lake, headed uphill (relatively easy class 2) to the saddle. Once at the lower saddle, it was a class 2+/3 scramble up the steepest section to the top of crest plateau. Final summit block approach was a narrow path with minimal elevation gain but significant exposure. However it had plenty of handholds, and a clear route so was overall much more straightforward than expected.
Overall, a very enjoyable peak climb. Distance is roughly 3.3 miles to the peak without switchbacks and around 3100 ft of elevation gained. I would definitely do this peak again, the summit block unlike any other i've seen, and gives the impression of storming a castle. I would recommend reaching the ridge as soon as possible to avoid too much talus.
