Itinerary description
If you are up to a bit of hiking and wish to avoid the crowds, this is a great hike. I do it using a driver, so I can easily get in the Madakaripura Waterfall and this hike in a day. Just as the descent into the caldera starts, take the dirt road on the left, pass the Lava View Lodge and continue along a ridge with views of Mt Semeru (watch for eruptions every 20 minutes!). The trail down into the caldera is obvious and thereafter just aim for the right hand side of Mt Batok and the temple.
Do the loop around the crater rim in the CCW direction, then you can turn back if somebody is unhappy about the exposure. Only the stretch to the shrine is a little airy, and the shrine can also be reached along the other crater ridges in very easy hiking.
