Itinerary description
A great day out on the lesser traveled routes of Mt Barney.
A long day but we made good time with a small and strong team but made sure to enjoy the views on offer once out of the bush on Savages. We car shuffled between Lower Portals and Yellow Pinch to save an hour on fire trails at the end of the day.
To start Savages you have to find your way up to the ridge from the fire trail after Egan Creek. Once on the ridge you follow it through the bush. We were here after the bushfires and the weeds had done well but were easy to get through. There were a lot of fallen trees to negotiate even through the rocky sections. Making our way up the rock was fun, nothing too tricky, rewarded by sweeping views when the ridge flattens out before the final ascent. The chimney up to West Peak is a little tricky and requires confident scrambling skills.
From West Peak you generally stick to the right to follow the ridge above Barney Gorge. It had been well cleared by the bushfires donor too many obstacles although the rocks were loose so it was a little slow. Not very technical as long as you stick to the right going down. We veered left near the end and had to do a dodgy traverse back to the correct ridge.
Once at Barney Creek head downstream to the campsite and then inland to the Lower Portals track. The track here disappeared in patches following the fires.
Rated very difficult due to the length and navigation skills required more than technical capability although small sections are tricky.
